An impressive pair of large 19th century Staffordshire pottery spaniel dogs, one bearing the impressed Sampson Smith 1851 Longton factory mark.

The marked example stands approximately 36 cm high, while the second is slightly larger at approximately 38 cm high. The larger dog is unmarked and appears to be the earlier of the two.

Both are traditionally modelled as seated spaniels with cream glazed bodies, hand-painted black markings and chain and pendant decoration. Subtle differences in their modelling, decoration and glaze give each dog its own individual character.

Their unusually large proportions give them considerable decorative presence and they display particularly well together, whether positioned on a large mantelpiece, dresser, console table or within a traditional country house interior.

Condition

Good antique condition with extensive age-related crazing to the glaze, together with rubbing and losses to areas of the original painted decoration. There are minor marks and firing imperfections consistent with the age and nature of 19th century Staffordshire pottery.

Dimensions

Sampson Smith example: approximately 36 cm high
Unmarked example: approximately 38 cm high

A particularly characterful pair of genuine antique Staffordshire dogs, with the Sampson Smith factory mark providing additional historical and collecting interest.
