An unusual pair of late Victorian mahogany pedestal cabinets incorporating original cabinetry by the renowned London furniture maker and retailer Heal & Son.
Dating from approximately 1880–1900, the cabinets display strong Aesthetic Movement styling with early Arts and Crafts influences. Their design features reeded uprights, panelled cupboard doors and distinctive geometric brass fittings. One drawer bears the impressed HEAL & SON LONDON maker’s stamp.
The two cabinets are believed to have originally formed the pedestal sections of a larger Heal & Son piece, possibly a dressing table or desk. They were subsequently adapted into separate freestanding cabinets while retaining their original drawers, doors and period brass fittings.
Each cabinet provides a useful upper drawer above a spacious cupboard fitted with an internal shelf. Their generous proportions make them ideal as tall bedside cabinets, lamp tables, occasional cabinets or attractive bedroom storage.
Condition
Good antique condition with wear and tear commensurate with age, including surface scratches, marks, knocks and natural variations in colour and finish.
Historic alterations and repairs are visible to one side, consistent with their adaptation from a larger piece of furniture. Both cabinets are structurally sound, and the drawers and cupboard doors function correctly. No keys are included.
