A handsome and substantial late Georgian mahogany secretaire bookcase, dating to approximately circa 1800.
This impressive two-part piece combines a glazed bookcase, fitted writing desk and generous drawer storage, making it both highly decorative and practical.
The upper section features a pair of glazed doors with elegant Gothic astragal glazing, with pointed intersecting arches typical of English furniture from the late Georgian period. The glazed section retains a working lock and provides excellent storage for books, ceramics or decorative pieces.
Below, the large secretaire drawer opens to form a writing surface and reveals a traditional fitted interior with pigeonholes and a central bank of small drawers. The writing section has been fitted with new felt, giving the desk area a clean and usable finish.
The lower section provides further full-width drawers for useful storage.
The construction displays a number of strong period features, including fine hand-cut dovetails, visible hand-saw overcuts and solid oak drawer linings, all consistent with quality English cabinetmaking from around 1800.
The mahogany has a rich, warm colour with attractive figuring and a naturally aged patina developed over more than two centuries.

Condition
Good antique condition overall with wear and tear commensurate with age.
There are general marks, scratches, knocks, colour variation, old repairs and areas of wear to the timber and polish.
Part of the mahogany facing is missing from the rear right-hand foot, although the foot itself remains solid and the bookcase stands securely.
The glazed bookcase lock is working.
The writing section has been fitted with new felt.
