A handsome Late Victorian oak twin-pedestal executive writing desk, dating to circa 1880–1900, featuring a beautifully aged green leather writing surface, ornate brass handles and an unusual combination of internal ledger trays and cupboard storage.

Rich in character and traditional craftsmanship, this impressive 19th-century desk combines the elegance of Victorian office furniture with practical proportions suitable for modern homes.

The rectangular desktop features an inset green leather writing surface with decorative gold-tooled and blind-stamped border detailing. The leather has developed a wonderfully aged patina, complementing the warm colour and attractive natural grain of the surrounding oak.

Measuring 130 cm wide, the desk provides a generous workspace without the excessive proportions of many traditional Victorian executive desks, making it ideal for a home office, country house study or library.

Traditional Victorian Craftsmanship

Beneath the writing surface are three practical frieze drawers, each fitted with decorative brass swan-neck handles mounted on ornate backplates.

The drawers feature traditional dovetail construction, solid oak interiors and smoothly rounded edges, demonstrating the quality of craftsmanship found throughout the piece.

The substantial pedestals are decorated with raised and fielded oak panels, adding architectural interest and emphasising the desk's traditional Victorian design.

Unusual Ledger Trays & Practical Storage

A particularly appealing feature is the different storage arrangements within the two pedestals.

One pedestal contains a series of graduated pull-out wooden ledger trays, each with distinctive scooped fronts. Originally designed for storing large account books, commercial records and documents, these unusual trays offer versatile storage for paperwork, stationery and office essentials.

The opposite pedestal features a traditional cupboard with a single internal shelf, providing two useful storage compartments for books, files and larger items.

Both storage sections are concealed behind hinged panelled doors fitted with traditional brass locking mechanisms.

This combination of specialist Victorian ledger storage and conventional cupboard space makes the desk particularly practical while adding to its historical interest.

With its beautifully patinated leather top, substantial oak construction and distinctive internal storage, this characterful desk would make a wonderful centrepiece for a traditional home office, library or period interior.

Condition

Good antique condition overall, with age-related marks and wear consistent with its considerable age and previous use.

The oak has developed a rich, warm colour and attractive patina, with scratches, minor knocks, surface marks and variations in the finish reflecting its history.

The inset green leather writing surface displays considerable age-related wear, including scuffs, fading, surface marks and areas of heavy patination.

The drawers, internal ledger trays and cupboard also show signs of age and previous use.

These imperfections are part of the desk's authentic Victorian character and individual appearance.

Please examine all photographs carefully, as they form an important part of the description.
