An impressive antique Baroque-style burr walnut chest of drawers, featuring beautifully figured walnut veneers, elaborate architectural mouldings and three generously proportioned drawers.

Believed to date from the late 17th to early 18th century, circa 1680–1720, this substantial chest displays many of the distinctive design characteristics associated with traditional Italian Baroque furniture.

Possibly originating from the Lombardy region of Italy, the chest combines richly decorative detailing with practical storage and a wonderfully warm, aged appearance.

Its substantial proportions, distinctive stepped front and intricate walnut figuring make it a striking statement piece for a traditional or period-inspired home.

Beautiful Burr Walnut & Baroque Craftsmanship

The generously proportioned rectangular top is a particularly attractive feature, showcasing richly figured burr walnut veneer with intricate swirling grain patterns and contrasting golden-brown tones.

The distinctive stepped front incorporates three full-width drawers, each framed by decorative geometric mouldings and fitted with ornate metal drop handles.

Carved architectural detailing to either side of the drawer fronts, together with the substantial moulded base, gives the chest its imposing Baroque-inspired appearance.

The walnut has developed a beautiful aged patina, with variations in colour and finish that contribute to its individual character.

Generous Storage with Unusual Fitted Compartments

The chest features three substantial drawers, providing excellent storage for clothing, bedding, linens and other household essentials.

The upper drawer has a particularly interesting fitted interior, incorporating two small removable wooden compartments positioned towards the front, each with a lift-off lid.

These concealed compartments are ideal for storing jewellery, keepsakes, correspondence and smaller personal belongings.

Behind them is a larger open storage area, lined in green felt.

The second and third drawers are generously proportioned and feature deep, open storage areas, also lined in green felt.

The unusual fitted compartments add an interesting practical feature to this distinctive piece of antique furniture.

A Statement Piece for Traditional Interiors

With its beautifully figured walnut, elaborate decorative detailing and substantial proportions, this handsome chest would make a wonderful addition to a country house, traditional bedroom, period living room or grand hallway.

Its relatively low height also makes it suitable for use as a decorative sideboard-style cabinet, providing an attractive surface for lamps, artwork, ceramics or treasured accessories.

The chest stands on four brass castors, believed to be later additions, which allow it to be moved more easily when required.

Whether placed in a traditional setting or used to introduce antique character into a contemporary interior, this attractive chest offers timeless decorative appeal alongside practical everyday storage.
