A decorative pair of antique Arts & Crafts side chairs, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, circa 1890–1910.
The chairs feature elegant ladder-style backs with slender horizontal rails, turned front legs and decorative stretchers. Their restrained design and handcrafted appearance show clear influence from the Arts & Crafts and Aesthetic Movement traditions of the period.
The form is reminiscent of furniture by makers such as William Birch and similar English workshops, although the chairs are unmarked and are not attributed to a particular maker.
Each chair has an upholstered seat in a rich red floral fabric, which complements the warm tones of the timber and gives the pair a strong decorative presence.
