A handsome antique Oak Bureau Bookcase combining practical storage with classic Arts & Crafts styling.

The upper section features glazed doors enclosing shelving, ideal for displaying books, ceramics and collectables, whilst the lower section incorporates a fall-front Writing Bureau opening to reveal a fitted interior with pigeon holes and a small central drawer.

Below are two useful drawers providing additional storage, making this a highly practical piece for a study, living room, home office or period interior. The piece stands on turned front supports united by stretchers and displays attractive oak grain throughout.

The glazed doors retain a working lock and key, although the lock is believed to be a later replacement rather than the original fitting. The bureau lock is absent.

The writing surface has been recovered in black vinyl.

There is evidence of historic woodworm, which appears long inactive, and the cabinet has been treated as a precautionary measure for complete peace of mind.

Our Opinion

We particularly like the proportions of this piece. Many antique bureau bookcases can be overly large for modern homes, whereas this example offers display space, storage and a useful writing area in a relatively compact footprint. The attractive oak grain and Arts & Crafts influence give it plenty of character without overwhelming a room.
